You either love them or you hate them. Those supermarket collectibles were intended to entice children and their money-hungry parents to their stores.

Recently, they have declined in popularity among consumers, mainly due to their wasteful nature. Nearly a year ago, Coles announced they would do away with their popular Little Shop collectibles to reduce plastic waste.

But they’re back honey, and this time they’re greener!

Coles announced this week the return of their collectibles in the form of 35 plastic-free characters inspired by one of the world’s most popular movie franchises.

Coles has joined forces with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to bring Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts characters to life with the launch of the Magical Builders collection campaign.

But there is a twist. The Wizarding World characters and playsets available from July 6 in Coles and Coles Express stores are plastic-free and recyclable.

Coles said it had worked to deliver one of the largest and most enduring Wizarding World-inspired collectibles Australia has ever seen.

The collectible characters, including Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley, are made from 100 percent Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified cardboard that can be recycled in household recycling bins.

The series also includes four recyclable plastic playsets with iconic decors fans will recognize from the Harry Potter films, including Hogwarts Castle and Quidditch Field, Platform 9Âľ, and Hogwarts Express.

The sets can also be taken apart and reassembled to create new settings.

Lisa Ronson, Coles’s Chief Marketing Officer, said the supermarket was delighted to partner with Warner Bros. Consumer Products and one of the world’s best-loved entertainment franchises to create Australia’s first collectible campaign.

“We wanted to find an interactive and sustainable way for customers to have fun, and that would appeal not just to children but guests of all ages,” she said.

“We know Australian fans have been waiting a long time for a collectible campaign like this one from Wizarding World, so we’re excited to work with Warner Bros. to bring Coles Magical Builders to life.

“With over 30 beloved characters and four iconic settings to collect, Magical Builders allow customers to be creative in building their magical world — all with the bonus of being plastic-free and recyclable.”

The collectibles have even received the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accolades.

FSC CEO Damian Paull said: “Together, we are driving positive change by providing forest-friendly alternatives to plastics. The Magical Builders range is made with responsibly sourced FSC® certified materials, protecting our forests for future generations.”

Beginning Wednesday, July 6, customers will receive one free Coles Magical Builder character with every $30 spent on one transaction at Coles supermarkets, Coles Online and Coles Express.

There are 30 characters and five special edition characters to collect. There will also be a Hogwarts Trunk Collector Case for sale.

The prices of play kits range from $9.75 to $15.

It comes two days after Woolworths launched its new collection for collectors.
